Cliff Mukavetz lives in a broken future. The promise of artificial intelligence was no match for the reality of insurance liability. Megalithic pumps groan day and night to keep Manhattan above water. Cliff embraces the twilight of civilization in true slacker fashion, nannying part-time for a New York power couple by day and doing absolutely nothing productive by night. When James Newsom, an estranged college friend, shows up on his stoop penniless, peddling get-rich-quick schemes and muttering about an impending revolution, Cliff is too much the Midwesterner to tell him to keep on walking. As James recruits a budding young propagandist—and forgotten crush—into his hustle, Cliff begins to suspect that maybe this is the dystopian future he's read so much about.
